Gwyn Jay Allen is a British–Sierra Leonean vocalist and performer whose career spans more than three decades across jazz, African, soul, gospel and musical theatre. Known for his rich vocal tone, charismatic stage presence and narrative performance style, he has built an international reputation as one of the leading interpreters of the music and spirit of Louis Armstrong.​

Allen’s professional career began in London in the early 1990s, performing in prestigious venues including residencies at the Hilton Park Lane and The Dorchester Hotel. His musicianship later led to collaborations and performances alongside artists such as Diana Ross, Maxi Priest, Herbie Hancock, Jamiroquai, Joss Stone and Basement Jaxx.

In 2001 he independently released his debut album “Land of Milk and Money”, launched during performances supporting gospel artist Kirk Franklin at the Royal Albert Hall. His theatre work includes starring as Cab Calloway in the West End production of The Blues Brothers, further establishing his reputation as a performer rooted in jazz heritage and theatrical storytelling.

Allen’s lifelong artistic connection to Louis Armstrong has become a defining strand of his career. He released the album “I Love Louis – A Creole Tribute to Louis Armstrong”, featuring BBC award winning pianist Alex Wilson and the late Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Roy Hargrove. A pivotal performance was when he was invited to perform at the Louis Armstrong House Museum on Louis’ 4 July birthday 2010 in New York. This was followed by his live 2018 portrayal of Armstrong on Sir Michael Parkinson’s London Palladium show with the BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Big Band, cemented his standing as a leading voice interpreting Armstrong’s music and legacy. His current stage production,               I Love Louis, produced by renowned actor and theatre producer Clarke Peters, blends music, narrative and cultural history in a theatrical concert that continues to tour internationally.

In television, Allen hosted UK top comedian and TV presenter Romesh Ranganathan in the Sierra Leone episode of   The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan. Contributing live music performances and cultural context to the programme, this led them to receiving a 2023 BAFTA Award Nomination.

Beyond his TV and Armstrong work, Allen’s contemporary project “Freetown – The Return” explores a fusion of soul, blues, jazz and West African folk musical influences. In April 2024, this ever evolving artist released a 4 song EP from his live album “Freetown – The Return” recorded at London’s renowned music venue Pizza Express Live!
